SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz, D-Glenview, issued the following statement after being sworn in Wednesday as a member of the 101st General Assembly:

“I am honored have the opportunity to serve a community that I have been grateful to raise a family in and call home. After the past four years of Gov. Rauner’s reckless partisan gridlock, I am optimistic at the renewed willingness to positively and effectively address our state’s challenges.

“I am committed to working on issues of harassment, violence and economic disparities that affect women across our state. Empowering women is key to building an equitable future, which is why I plan to push proposals that will protect our personal health decisions, work to eliminate the wage gap, and ensure harassment and violence are not tolerated in public or private spaces. Women’s rights are about more than ensuring safety and security – we must empower women to reach their full potential in every facet of our lives whether the workplace, school or home.

“I will also prioritize much needed commonsense gun safety laws. Gun violence has plagued our nation and our communities for far too long, and we must do more in Illinois to prevent the next tragedy.

“As an immigration attorney, I also pledge to expand and continue my work ensuring the American Dream is achievable to those who come here for a better life. My experience practicing law and engaging in our courts grants me a valuable perspective into the gaps in our system and how we can improve it.

“It is a privilege to serve this community, and I look forward to hearing from residents, community leaders and all other stakeholders as we work to meet our community’s diverse needs and create comprehensive solutions to the challenges that face our state.”
