DECATUR, Ill. – State Rep. Sue Scherer, D- Decatur, is encouraging area residents to submit nominations for the 2019 Governor’s Volunteer Service Awards.

“I know from knocking on doors throughout the 96th District that there are a lot of compassionate people living in Central Illinois,” Scherer said. “Many of them don’t get the recognition they deserve for the work they give back to our communities.”

The Serve Illinois Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service is seeking nominations for the 2019 Governor’s Volunteer Service Awards in the following categories:

  • Youth (18 years old or younger)
  • Adult (19-54 years old)
  • Senior (55 years old plus)
  • AmeriCorps Member (member of an Illinois AmeriCorps national service program)
  • Business (a for-profit company)
  • Senior Corps Members (55 years old plus who are members of the national service programs Foster Grandparent Program (FGP), Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), Senior Companion Program (SCP))

Previous winners in the East Central region include Land of Lincoln Credit Union in Decatur, Alice Bray of Decatur for service to Dove’s Children’s Clothing Room, Larry Altenbaumer of Decatur for service to Grow Decatur, Mr. John’s School of Cosmetology, Esthetics and Nails to Ronald McDonald House of Charities of Central Illinois, Diamond Jackson of Springfield for service to the District 186 School Board and Teresa Haley of Springfield for service to the NAACP.

More information and the nomination form are available here. Nominations are due by Feb. 15, 2019.

“The extra attention and awareness these acknowledgements provide can lead to new volunteers and donations to assist even more of our communities’ most vulnerable residents,” Scherer said. “I would encourage people to take the time to nominate someone who’s committed to making a positive difference and to reach out to my office at 217-877-9636 if they need assistance with the nomination process.”
