CHICAGO – To help train people to respond quickly in times of crisis, state Rep. Sonya M. Harper, D-Chicago, will host Violence Reduction & Trauma Response meetings at her constituent services office with the goal of creating community based solutions to gun violence.

“I am asking my local residents to join me in these meetings to learn how they can best help out in times of crisis,” said Harper. “It’s a good thing for everyone to arm themselves with knowledge on how to handle stressful situations when trying to save lives, and this will be the goal of my team meetings.”

Harper’s Violence Reduction & Trauma Response meetings were created to help train local residents to be better equipped to help victims of gun violence and assist them until first responders arrive. Harper plans to hold these team meetings at the following dates at her district office, located at 4926 S. Ashland from 1 p.m. until 3 p.p.:

  • Saturday, July 28
  • Saturday, Aug. 25
  • Saturday, Sept. 29
  • Saturday, Oct. 27
  • Saturday, Nov. 17
  • Saturday, Dec. 15

“Law enforcement cannot always arrive immediately at crime scenes to help victims in their time of need, and in these critical situations every second counts,” said Harper. “It falls on us and fellow neighbors to be ready and able to respond and care for those who are victims of violence.”

Harper represents the 6th District, which includes all or portions of Armour Square, Bridgeport, Chicago Lawn, Englewood, Gage Park, Back of the Yards, Canaryville, New City, West Englewood, and Marquette Park.
