SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – A bill by state Rep. Sue Scherer, D-Decatur, which creates a task force to study credit card marketing targeting college students passed the Senate last week.

“This bill passed out of the Senate on a unanimous vote,” Scherer said. “That’s reflective of the effort put into this bill and the compromise we worked out.”

House Bill 4710 will create the College Student Credit Card Marketing and Debt Task Force and will be composed of eight members. The task force will look into the leading factors regarding how credit card companies market themselves on college campuses and why students are racking up so much debt. This was Scherer’s attempt to once again work in a bipartisan manner to move the conversation forward about predatory lending against college students.

“The goal of this taskforce is to get clear information on how college students are ending up with so much credit card debt.” Scherer said. “Once we have that information, I plan on crafting legislation that will help protect students from being saddled with further debt.”
