SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – With a budget introduced by Governor Bruce Rauner relying on an expiring tax exemptions on working families throughout the State of Illinois, State Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, is pushing to pass a measure that will protect the existing standard income tax exemption to ensure that taxes don’t increase on hard-working families.
“Families of all kinds of backgrounds deserve better than to be used as pawns in the Governor’s political games,” said Moylan. “His introduced budget makes an assumption that will remove a needed tax exemption that saves people thousands of dollars each year; essentially he wants to raise taxes on homeowners to fill holes in his budget and that’s downright shameful.”
Moylan, who also voted against an income tax increase last year, is the House sponsor of Senate Bill 1437. The measure will reinstate a tax exemption for residents which was set to sunset this year. The exemption will continue saving taxpayers upwards of more than $2,000 per year plus a cost-of-living adjustment on taxes, an apparatus that Governor Rauner counted on throwing out in his introduced budget. The measure also has provisions that would allow veterans who are classified as 100% service-connected disabled the benefit of not having to re-apply for the exemption every year and making their exemptions standard.
“Instead of balancing the budget on the backs of everyday families and raising their taxes, we need to provide them with relief that makes life easier for them and promotes a better quality of life,” said Moylan. “I hope the Governor knows that to come to real budgetary solutions, we have to create revenue that doesn’t increase the tax burden for middle-class families and our most vulnerable populations. He’s choosing the easy way out and I won’t allow that to happen. More real work needs to be done.”
Senate Bill 1437 is currently in the House Revenue and Finance Committee, awaiting House consideration and approval in the near future.
