SPRINGFIELD – To provide Lake County homeowners with additional property tax relief, state Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, is sponsoring legislation to increase the value of exemptions for middle-class families and senior homeowners, bringing Lake County tax relief in line with Cook County levels.
“My legislation increases the value of property tax relief afforded to middle-class homeowners and senior citizens to reduce the property tax burden and help people keep their homes,” Yingling said. “Lake County residents pay the seventh highest property tax rates in the country. Our property tax system is abusive and regressive, and this bill helps ease the tax load carried by my constituents and helps put my neighbors on a level playing field with Cook County homeowners.”
Yingling introduced House Bill 5775 to create property tax exemption uniformity between Cook County and the collar counties by raising the exemption limits for DuPage, Lake, McHenry and Will counties from $5,000 to $8,000 for the senior homestead exemption and from $6,000 to $10,000 for the general homestead exemption.
