CHICAGO – State Rep. Camille Y. Lilly, D-Chicago, is promoting an opportunity for taxpayers to submit state government cost-saving ideas through her office to the State Government Suggestion Award Board.

“This is another way to bring government directly to people and have them participate in their democracy,” said Lilly. “Everyone has ideas on how to make Illinois more efficient and effective, and my constituents should always feel free to express those concerns to me at any time.”

The State Government Suggestion Award Board allows Illinois residents to submit ideas to help eliminate wasteful spending in state government. Following review, individuals whose suggestions resulted in actual money saved would be awarded between $50 and $5,000, depending on the amount of savings for the state. Suggestions must be original and cannot require a change in the state or federal constitution. According to the Illinois Department of Central Management Services, since 1993, the state has realized a savings of over $500,000 through ideas submitted.

“Taxpayers have a chance to receive a stipend and recognition from the state based on the impact of their ideas on the state budget and programs,” said Lilly. “There is no limit to this idea, so everyone should try to take advantage of this tool to help not only themselves but the state as well.”
