SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Jay Hoffman, D-Swansea, passed legislation out of the Illinois House this week to give the Secretary of State the ability to authorize and issue special license plates to recognize military service members and veterans.

“Our veterans deserve great respect and distinction for their honorable service to our country,” Hoffman said. “I’m proud to have introduced and passed this bipartisan bill that gives active duty military personnel and veterans the opportunity to apply for combat license plates through the Secretary of State’s office. This is something we should make available to our veterans to honor their selfless contributions to the place we all call home.”

Hoffman’s House Bill 4576 would grant the Secretary of State’s office the authority to issue new “Combat Action Ribbons” and “Combat Action Badges” to be included on Illinois license plates for the purposes of signifying allegiance to the U.S. military. The bipartisan bill passed the House unanimously on Tuesday and is awaiting consideration in the Senate.

“As some of the most noble and distinguished members of our state, our veterans deserve to be uniquely recognized,” Hoffman said. “It is my plan to continue working with all members of the legislature to honor these outstanding men and women, and recognize their service to our country.”
