BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. – State Rep. Jonathan Carroll, D-Buffalo Grove, is co-sponsoring legislation that requires broadband internet service providers to practice net neutrality, ensuring that consumers have access to free and open information relative to internet accessibility.
“Broadband internet providers should not have the ability to deceive consumers,” Carroll said. “To hold these powerful stakeholders to a higher ethical standard, I’m proud to be co-sponsoring a bill that will advance the consumer interest by making information available on the quality of services they are receiving.”
The Carroll-backed measure holds that the state may not legitimize any contract to an internet service provider unless the provider practices net neutrality, which would prevent providers from tampering with internet access and performance based on what consumers are paying for service.
“It is time to implement checks-and-balances on powerful business interests to protect our consumers,” Carroll said. “And this common-sense bill helps us meet that objective by demanding more transparency from internet service providers.”
