BELLEVILLE, Ill. – A new law supported by state Rep. Jay Hoffman, D-Swansea, designed to prevent over 1 million Illinoisans from losing healthcare coverage will take effect on Jan. 1.
“The hardworking men and women in our state deserve reasonable access to quality healthcare,” Hoffman said. “The misguided effort by Washington politicians to abandon healthcare for those with pre-existing conditions is unconscionable.”
The Hoffman-supported House Bill 2959 prevents large insurance companies and corporations from denying healthcare coverage to those with pre-existing conditions. The new state law was proposed as a first line of defense against efforts by the federal government to impose sweeping changes to healthcare system that would significantly reduce Illinoisans’ access to healthcare.
“A person should not be denied coverage by an insurance company because they have a pre-existing illness,” Hoffman said. “This law will make sure that individuals will not have to worry about coverage when they change jobs or change insurance.”
