HANOVER PARK, Ill. – State Rep. Michelle Mussman, D-Schaumburg, recently accepted an invitation to participate in School District U-46’s Principal for a Day program at Hanover Park’s Horizon Elementary School with Principal Jennifer Schwardt.

“I am fortunate to represent so many accomplished school teachers, principals, administrators and students,” said Mussman. “It benefits both myself and the schools in my district for me to remember firsthand experiences like today when legislating on issues regarding elementary education. As the spouse of a public-school teacher and former PTA leader, I am thankful for the sacrifices that educators make to ensure that our kids receive the best possible education to prepare them for high school and beyond.”

The Principal for a Day program allows local officials to learn firsthand about the difficulties, responsibilities and rewards of leading an elementary school on a day-to-day basis.

“For students, the technology used in the classroom today has advanced dramatically since their parents were in the classroom. Educators are also now teaching their students social and emotional skills in addition to advanced academic ones. Furthermore, our teachers are taking on the added responsibility of meeting the mental health and complex physical needs of the next generation of leaders.”
