SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Sonya Harper, D-Chicago, is opposing all attempts by the Trump administration and his extreme allies from raising taxes on middle and working-class families.

“The people I represent simply cannot afford any more taxes on top of the struggles they have to deal with on a daily basis,” Harper said. “Forcing them to pay higher taxes to help millionaires and billionaires profit even more is shameful and wrong. People like President Trump and Governor Rauner should be paying their fair share, and any new taxes should seek to ensure millionaires and billionaires pay more based upon their wealth.”

Harper’s House Resolution 672 states the Illinois General Assembly’s opposition to Trump’s latest tax plan that would eliminate the state and local tax (SALT) deduction. This critical deduction prevents working families from double taxation by allowing them to deduct the costs of their state and local taxes from their federal taxes. Harper feels that a progressive tax plan should be negotiated to protect working and middle-class families, not a plan that helps the wealthiest make more.

“It is unacceptable that our president does not care about the struggles of working families,” said Harper. “We need to be lifting up working and middle-class families, not cutting taxes for the ultra-wealthy.”
