ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Veterans who adopt a cat or dog from the Quad City Animal Welfare Center this Veterans Day will have the adoption fee waived, state Rep. Mike Halpin, D-Rock Island, announced today.

“Veterans made incredible sacrifices to protect our freedoms,” said Halpin. “This pet adoption event is an expression of gratitude to those who have served and the family members who supported their loved one while that service member was overseas.”

The Quad City Animal Welfare Center, located at 724 2nd Ave. W. in Milan, is one of 15 participating shelters throughout the state that is waiving adoption fees for veterans on Saturday, Nov. 11. The all-day pet adoption event is an initiative of Comptroller Susana Mendoza along with Fifth Third Bank and Bunker Labs, a national not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization built by military veteran entrepreneurs to empower other military veterans as leaders in innovation. Halpin is encouraging Quad-City area military families to take advantage of the waived fee to give a loving home to an animal in need.

“For veterans returning home, adopting a pet can help ease the transition into civilian life,” said Halpin. “At the same time, this event also helps ease the burden on overcrowded shelters. I’m grateful to the generous sponsors who are making it possible and showing their appreciation for local veterans.”
