DES PLAINES, Ill. – Local homeowners will now have the ability to lower their property taxes thanks to legislation recently backed by state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines.
“Skyrocketing property taxes are hurting middle-class families across Illinois and its time something be done to provide them with real relief,” Moylan said. “The legislation I supported gives area homeowners the ability to lower their property taxes through the ballot box.”
Moylan worked with Democrats and Republicans to craft a plan that helps fix Illinois’ broken school funding formula, while rejecting a multimillion dollar property tax hike that was included in a plan proposed by Gov. Rauner. Moylan’s legislation provides fair funding for schools statewide without picking winners and losers, and allows voters in well-funded school districts to lower the property tax levy through a referendum process.
Moylan has continually fought to provide real property tax relief for area homeowners, voting to both freeze property taxes and reduce them. He also backed legislation earlier this year to provide additional relief for seniors, disabled residents, and veterans.
“Marty Moylan knows the biggest issue facing our families is skyrocketing property taxes and he has been fighting to lower them,” said Martin Mauer, a resident of Park Ridge. “I appreciate Marty’s efforts to reduce property taxes and help homeowners keep more of their hard-earned money in their pockets.”
