Stuart Prioritizes Local Business in Buy Illinois, Buy America Bills

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Looking to invest in local companies and workers, state Rep. Katie Stuart, D-Edwardsville, is spearheading a plan that would require state agencies to prioritize Illinois and American made goods when making purchases.

“Outsourcing jobs and business is wrong for our communities,” said Stuart. “We need to put our money where our mouth is and make a commitment to investing in local businesses that employ Illinois workers. The state should not be supporting foreign-made products when equally adequate products can be found here in the United States.”

Stuart is backing House Bills 137 and 138, which require the state to purchase products made in Illinois and the United States. To qualify, at least 50 percent of an item must be made in Illinois or the United States. Provisions in House Bill 137 and 138 allow foreign purchases to be made if locally made items are excessively expensive or do not meet quality standards.

“Every time we buy a product, we make a statement about our priorities and values,” Stuart added. “By Buying American and Buying Illinois, we are sending a message that our jobs and our workers are valued and vital to building a stronger economy.”
