CHICAGO, Ill.  –In an effort to help concerned community members, state Rep. Elizabeth “Lisa” Hernandez, D-Cicero, member of the Latino Caucus, partnered with Rise and Organize, The Resurrection Project, and the Illinois Student Association Commission to host a Know Your Rights Seminar last Saturday at the Little Village Library.

“Recent raids on immigrants throughout the nation have shaken our communities,” said Hernandez. “In these difficult times, we need to reassure people that they are not alone because we are fighting to protect them.”

The event featured presentations from representatives of Rise and Organize, and The Resurrection Project.  Community members were able to learn about their rights as immigrants, the limits of what the government can do, and was followed by a Q&A section.

“The marches across the country have shown us that Americans want us to work on ways to keep families together, not tear them apart,” said Hernandez. “Governor Rauner cannot sit by idly while disgraceful acts of discrimination take place. Our communities need him to take a strong stance on behalf of all immigrant residents who are here raising families and contributing to our state.”
