Halpin Introduces Bill to Freeze Property Taxes for those with Disabilities

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – In an attempt to ease the burden on rising property taxes, state Rep. Mike Halpin, D-Rock Island, has introduced legislation that will freeze property taxes on individuals with a disability.

“Individuals with disabilities are often on a fixed income, so rising costs and fees often threaten their way of life,” Halpin said. “Vulnerable individuals should not have their lives turned upside down because local governments keep rising property tax rates.”

House Bill 3702 would freeze the assessment of the property of a person with a disability. Currently, these individuals can only qualify for a $2,000 reduction of the assessed value of the house. A freeze already exists for senior citizens. Individuals who qualify for the exemption will have to reapply every year.

“We should not be asking individuals on a fixed income, including veterans, to pay more,” Halpin said. “This is a common sense piece of legislation, and I hope my colleagues will join me in protecting our most vulnerable residents.”
