SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Kelly Burke, D-Evergreen Park, will push for a resolution to the state’s budget stalemate, demand responsible funding for Illinois community colleges and universities, and fight for college affordability programs as the new chairperson of a key House committee overseeing the state’s higher education budget.
“As chairperson of the Appropriations-Higher Education Committee, my goal will be to ensure our community colleges and universities receive the funding they need to help our students thrive,” Burke said. “I am also focused on protecting the MAP Grant program, which helps thousands of students afford the cost of their education.”
In recognition of her commitment to bipartisanship, and her dedication to efficiently and thoroughly funding education at all levels, Burke will serve as the new chairperson of Appropriations-Higher Education Committee during the coming legislation session. The position gives Burke the opportunity to continue fighting for the release of these desperately needed funds. Throughout the ongoing budget crisis, Burke has been fighting to fully fund Illinois’ higher education system. Early this year, she supported passage of an emergency $400 million funding plan for state universities, community colleges, and the MAP Grant program.
Burke was also named as vice chairperson of Health Care Licenses Committee and will sit on the Labor and Commerce Committee, Personnel and Pensions Committee, Police and First Responders Committee, Tollway Oversight Committee, and Tourism, Hospitality and Craft Industry Committee.
“My role on these committees that deal with a variety of issues will ensure that our area is heard in Springfield,” Burke said. “I am especially looking forward to serving on the newly created First Responders Committee and working to ensure that the hardworking men and women who protect our communities receive the resources and support they deserve.”
