DECATUR, Ill. – Responding to a motion filed Thursday by Attorney General Lisa Madigan to stop paying state workers, state Rep. Sue Scherer, D-Decatur, has issued the following statement:

“Withholding pay to workers would dramatically and severely disrupt state services and put resident’s health, safety, and well-being at risk. From caring for senior citizens to keeping our prisons safe, state employees perform vital services upon which residents and businesses depend. The prospects of a shutdown of state government are unacceptable and threatening to working families in my district and throughout Illinois.

“This move is a wake-up call to do what should have been done 19 months ago – pass a budget for the state of Illinois. My focus continues to be on resolving the budget as soon as possible in a way that protects the middle class and working families. This is an urgent matter that cannot wait. With each day that Illinois goes without a budget, the damage increases and becomes more difficult to repair. The people of our state deserve better, and I will not stop fighting for them.”
