SPRINGFIELD, Ill.– In response to Governor Bruce Rauner’s State of the State address on Wednesday, state Rep. John D’Amico, D-Chicago, released the following statement:
“Our state has been damaged greatly due to the budget impasse over the last two years, and we need to come together and pass a responsible, balanced budget. I am hopeful that he returns to the negotiating table, so that we are able to pass a much-needed full budget.
“Over the past two years, the governor has made the case that the state must enact economic reforms to improve the business climate in Illinois. I agree with the governor’s assessment, but not his cuts-only approach that aims to lower costs for huge corporations by reducing wages and the standard of living for middle-class families.
“I support an economic reform agenda that focuses on two things: helping small and medium-sized Illinois employers and strengthening the middle-class.
“This includes measures aimed at leveling the playing field between small and medium-sized businesses and huge corporations by simplifying the tax code. Corporations with armies of insider lawyers and lobbyists shouldn’t game the system by taking advantage of tax-loopholes. Instead, we need to crack down on companies that ship jobs overseas by ensuring they do not receive incentives from taxpayers.
“I will also be supporting measures that strengthen the middle-class by expanding tax credits for working families, increasing the minimum wage and making sure that our schools are fully funded, so that all children are receiving the educational opportunities they deserve.
“Our economic agenda will help grow the economy, create jobs, and ensure we have a vibrant middle-class in Illinois. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the General Assembly and the governor to build a better Illinois for today and tomorrow.”
