CHICAGO, Ill. – Following the Veterans’ Affairs Committee hearing on Tuesday on the outbreaks of Legionnaire’s Disease at the Illinois Veterans’ Home in Quincy, State Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia, D-Aurora, issued the following statement:

“The Rauner administration’s response to the Legionnaire’s Disease outbreak at the Quincy Illinois Veterans’ Home is unacceptable. Rauner and Director Jeffries assured us that the facility’s water was safe and that any presence of legionella bacteria was being properly managed, yet residents of the Quincy facility continued to suffer from a preventable and curable disease. We need to thoroughly examine the health care protocols that blatantly failed to protect these veterans and their loved ones.

According to Director Jeffries, the health care protocols were not changed or re-evaluated in response to the epidemic in 2015. I am stunned at such disregard for the health and well-being of the brave men and women who have served this country. It is clear that these protocols need to change and further investigations are required to find out how and why this tragedy occurred.”
