AURORA, Ill. – With frigid temperatures and snowfall predicted to continue through the new year, state Rep Linda Chapa LaVia, D-Aurora, has been reaching out to seniors in her district to make sure that they are warm and well-equipped for the forecasted weather conditions.
“Seniors are especially vulnerable in the winter months, and we should all make it a priority to check on our elderly neighbors and loved ones to make sure that they are safe and comfortable during the extreme cold,” Chapa LaVia said. “Whether that means shoveling their sidewalks or making sure their thermostats are working, we need to do what we can to keep them safe in this weather.”
To make sure senior citizens in her district are well, Chapa LaVia has been making calls to residents age 70 and over. Chapa LaVia has also been encouraging those without reliable heat to visit local warming centers and use space heaters in their homes. A list of warming centers in Aurora and surrounding areas can be found on the city of Aurora’s website, www.aurora-il.org, or on the Kane County website, http://www.countyofkane.org/Pages/Alerts.aspx.
“Isolation can be another threat to the elderly in the winter months, and visiting a warming center can help seniors socialize while remaining safe and warm,” Chapa LaVia said. “Warming centers are a great resource for anyone who is without heat in the winter, and I hope to help people in need find the center that is most easily accessible to them.”
Chapa LaVia plans to continue making calls to seniors in the area to make sure they are doing well during the winter months, and her office will continue to provide information on warming centers and other winter resources for those who need them. Residents are encouraged to contact Chapa LaVia’s constituent service office at 630-270-1848 or LindaChapaLaVia@IL83Dist.com.
