CHICAGO – To help ensure a safe and happy holiday season, state Rep. Melissa Conyears-Ervin, D-Chicago, is encouraging parents to avoid purchasing dangerous products for their children and to take appropriate precautions when giving toys with small pieces that can be choking hazards.
“The holidays should be a time spent making happy memories with loved ones rather than stressful moments due to accidents caused by dangerous toys. That is why it is important for families to be aware of potentially hazardous gifts,” Conyears-Ervin said. “The yearly toy safety guide is a helpful tool to educate parents about what to watch out for and avoid.”
To avoid potential accidents and dangerous toys, Conyears-Ervin recommends that parents read through this year’s toy safety guide. The guide, which has been published annually for the past 10 years, includes information about toys that have been recalled due to safety hazards as well as safety tips about toys and games that pose a choking hazard for young children. Conyears-Ervin advises exercising caution even when buying gifts not listed in the current guide since products that have not been recalled can still lead to safety issues. Toys from second-hand sellers may have been recalled or listed in previous guides.
“It is important to me that my residents have as stress free of a time during the holidays as possible,” Conyears-Ervin said. “I encourage families to familiarize themselves with the toy safety guide to avoid any potential accidents or hazards.”
