Scherer to Host Health Coverage Enrollment Seminar with Get Covered Illinois

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Sue Scherer, D-Decatur, and Get Covered Illinois will be hosting an open enrollment seminar for health insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on Monday, Dec. 11 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at Union Baptist Church, located at 1405 E. Monroe St. in Springfield.

“While Washington politicians are attempting to slash life-saving coverage for the most vulnerable in our community, I want to make it easier for residents to enroll in health care coverage,” said Scherer. “The enrollment process should not be an added source of anxiety for patients who are already worried about doctors’ appointments, missing time at work and taking care of their families.”

The seminar will provide information on what is covered under different health plans, how to choose the best plan for an individual’s or family’s needs and how to enroll in ACA coverage. Health care experts from Get Covered Illinois will be available to help applicants understand the enrollment process and answer any questions they may have about how their plan works.

An advocate for high-quality, affordable health care, Scherer co-sponsored House Resolution 445 opposing a proposed federal health care overhaul that would strip health care coverage for an estimated 24 million people nationwide. Earlier this year, Scherer also voted to pass House Bill 2959, which prohibits insurers selling policies in Illinois from denying care on the basis of a pre-existing condition.

“It can be confusing for consumers to really know what’s going on with health care at the federal level, with a shorter enrollment period this year and higher premiums on some plans,” said Scherer. “I would encourage anyone looking for a plan on the federal marketplace to come to this free seminar to get assistance navigating the enrollment process and finding the best plan for them.”
