AURORA, Ill. – State Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia, D-Aurora, has been walking door to door in order to gather community support for a bill that would provide tax relief for homeowners.

“Some of the homeowners I’ve spoken to in my district are paying over $12,000 in property taxes while living on a fixed income,” Chapa LaVia said. “My constituents desperately need lower property taxes, and I will continue to do whatever it takes to provide real relief to middle-class families and those who have been the hardest hit.”

The legislation that Chapa LaVia is supporting, Senate Bill 851, would freeze property taxes on all units of government for two years with a possible extension through voter referendum. The bill also increases the General Homestead Exemption to $10,000 and the Senior Exemption to $8,000. If passed and signed into law, the measure would immediately affect Kane County for levy years 2017 and 2018.

For more information, or to sign the petition in support of property tax relief, please call Chapa LaVia’s constituent service office at 630-270-1848.
