SPRINGFIELD – As President Donald Trump and Republican politicians are attempting to rollback health care protections for millions of Americans, legislation sponsored by state Rep. Silvana Tabares, D-Chicago, preventing insurance companies from denying coverage to individuals with pre-existing conditions is now law.
“Donald Trump’s health care plan would be devastating for Illinois families, especially those individuals with pre-existing conditions who would lose access to critical care,” Tabares said. “Trump and his extreme allies are coming after our health care yet again, so it’s time we stand up to them and say no way. This new law makes it clear that Donald Trump’s health care disaster has no place in Illinois.”
While Washington politicians are again pushing a plan that would allow giant insurance companies to pad their profits by denying care to people born with congenital heart conditions, diabetes or who have battled cancer or other diseases, Tabares’ House Bill 2959 prohibits insurance corporations selling plans in Illinois from denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions. The new law is a first step toward protecting the estimated 1.3 million Illinoisans who could lose access to care under Trump’s plan.
“Health insurance companies should not be padding their profits on the backs of sick Illinoisans,” Tabares said. “Regardless of what Donald Trump and his Republican allies do, Illinois residents will be protected.”
