SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Today, the Co-Chair of the Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus issued the following statement after the Trump Administration announced it was ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program:

“We are incredibly disappointed by President Trump’s decision to end DACA. This decision shows us yet again that Donald Trump lacks the empathy and compassion needed from a president in order to protect the ideals and values our country stands for. In six months, nearly 42,000 young people in Illinois will be forced out of their jobs and will be put under immediate threat of deportation, unless Congress acts. Beyond the staggering human cost, removing this many people from the workforce will be detrimental to our country’s economy, as their removal will cost roughly $460 billion in lost GDP over a decade.

“Dreamers, more than any other immigrant group, are well integrated into American society. These young people are community members, they are students, teachers, nurses, and engineers. They learned English as children and were educated in our local schools. They pay taxes and contribute to our economy just like everyone else. And bringing this program to an end puts the lives of thousands of young people susceptible to an agenda that seeks to divide us on the basis of race, gender, and religion.

“Time and time again we have seen government failing to act on behalf of immigrant communities. We saw this when DACA had to be put in place because Congress failed to enact comprehensive immigration reform. And we saw it again recently when immigration officials ordered an innocent Berwyn grandmother of ten to leave the country after initially being told that her case was low priority. So now it is up to us to fight on behalf of the 42,000 Dreamers who reside in Illinois and contribute to its economy and culture.

“And as the governor of the state with the fifth largest Latino population, we call on Governor Bruce Rauner to stand with us and to denounce this hateful act by the leader of his party.”
