GLENVIEW, Ill. – Legislation sponsored by state Rep. Laura Fine, D-Glenview, to protect individuals from losing access to health insurance due to pre-existing conditions was signed into law late last week.

Fine sponsored House Bill 2959, which prevents insurance companies from denying access to health care coverage to people with pre-existing conditions, including migraines, arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, diabetes, epilepsy, heart disease and more.

After the Affordable Care Act passed, people with pre-existing conditions were no longer denied health care coverage. “We have heard many different proposals recently coming from Washington about changes to our health care policy, and in each of these proposals millions of Americans could lose their health insurance because of pre-existing conditions,” Fine said. “In Illinois, that would have meant that over 1.3 million individuals could have been dropped by their health insurance company. With this new law, these individuals will not have to worry about access to health care.”
