VERNON HILLS, Ill. – State Rep. Carol Sente, D-Vernon Hills, is calling on Gov. Bruce Rauner to sign legislation that would fund schools at the levels required to allow them to open in the fall.
“State leaders have a responsibility to provide parents the confidence and peace of mind that local schools will open in the fall,” Sente said. “Our district has many fantastic schools with talented students and teachers to match, which is why I am fighting down in Springfield to ensure they have access to the resources they need to succeed.”
Senate Bill 1 creates a new school funding formula whereby local schools that Sente represents would receive over $1.1 million in additional state funding. Unlike previous proposals introduced in Springfield, this legislation ensures that no Illinois school would lose money. Even though an alternative plan has not passed the Legislature, Gov. Rauner has stated he will veto Senate Bill 1. Education experts suggest that without an education funding reform bill signed into law soon, many schools will be unable to open in the fall.
“Gov. Rauner’s staff have previously stated that he supports 90 percent of what’s in the school funding reform legislation, but even still he has vowed to veto it. The consequences of such a veto would be far-reaching, because if schools are unable to open Illinois students may start to fall behind their peers in other states and many parents may be forced to stay home from work or pay for costly child care,” Sente said. “In the spirit of bipartisanship and compromise, it is my hope that the Governor will listen to the pleas of parents, teachers, students, school board members and administrators throughout our state and sign Senate Bill 1 to ensure every child in our state has access to a world-class education.”
Sente is encouraging residents to contact Gov. Rauner’s office at 312-814-2121 or 217-782-0244 and urge him to sign Senate Bill 1 to ensure all Illinois children have access to a quality education.
