DES PLAINES, Ill. – Continuing his efforts to support troops deployed overseas, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, announces he is launching a “Cell Phones for Soldiers” program and encourages local residents to participate with the project.

“This is a great program that will help deployed veterans connect with their family while they are off aboard,” Moylan said. “Please make good use of any cell phones, smartphones, MP3 players and tablets that you are no longer using by donating them to this program.”

“Cell Phones for Soldiers” is designed to collect used electronic devices and sell them to be refurbished or recycled. The nonprofit organization then takes the proceeds they gained from the donated electronics and other charitable donations to send prepaid international calling cards to troops to use via their military approved phones. Each donated mobile phone valued at $5 will provide a veteran with an estimated two-and-a-half hours of free talk. Proceeds are also used to continue the Helping Heroes Home program. This program consists of emergency funds that have assisted over 2,800 veterans.

Residents are encouraged to drop items off at Rep. Moylan’s full-time constituent office located at 24 S. Des Plaines River Road in Des Plaines. The office is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For your convenience, items can also be slipped through the mail slot.

“I encourage any and all residents to please stop by my office and donate their old cell phones or tablets they are not using anymore, to a great cause that directly benefits our veterans,” Moylan said. “I’m sure the brave men and women would greatly appreciate the calling cards to connect them with their family.”
