SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Today, state Rep. Brandon Phelps, D-Harrisburg, supported a comprehensive property tax reform package to cut property taxes for Southern Illinois homeowners.
“I have voted over a dozen times to freeze property taxes for local families because the unfortunate truth is property taxes in our area continue to rise every single year while the value of folks’ homes goes down,” said Phelps. “These increases result in outrageous property tax rates, and the people that I represent are in desperate need for relief.”
The legislation that Rep. Phelps supported, Senate Bill 484, is a comprehensive property tax reform package that will amend both the Property Tax Extension Limit Law and the Property Tax Code. This legislation goes further that previous measures by not only freezing property taxes, but actually cutting them. It would also expand exemptions for seniors, veterans and disabled homeowners.
Phelps also supported several items that the governor has requested prior to agreeing to a budget, including reforming the workers’ compensation system and consolidating local governments.
“I want the governor to understand that I am trying to compromise and find common ground to provide relief to Illinois homeowners,” continued Phelps. “I will continue to stand up for middle class families and helping provide relief for small businesses and homeowners.”
