WESTCHESTER, Ill., – State Rep. Emanuel “Chris” Welch recently introduced legislation to provide funding for violence prevention programs to communities that have been most affected by increased violence.

“Over the past several years we have seen an increase in violence throughout the area,” Welch said. “This year, there have already been six homicides in Maywood, which has sent shockwaves throughout the community. Unfortunately, this increase in violence is hardly surprising when Governor Rauner has slashed funding for violence prevention, after-school and summer jobs programs.”

Welch recently introduced legislation with 27 of his colleagues to provide funding to community based organizations in their districts that have programs that can help reduce violence. House Bill 4008 would provide $2 million to the 7th District to fund programs including violence preventing programs, job training programs, youth sports, library workshops and more.

“We know that when kids become have opportunities and become invested in their communities, violence decreases,” Welch said. “I am saddened that Governor Rauner fails to see how helping keep our neighborhoods safe helps make Illinois a better place to live and do business. My focus will always be on helping improve the lives of working families, not the wealthy and well-connected. Please sign my petition to help show Governor Rauner that we need a budget that funds programs that keeps our communities safe by funding violence prevention programs.”
