STREAMWOOD, Ill. – State Representative Rep. Fred Crespo, D-Hoffman Estates, recently teamed up with the Illinois Treasurer’s Office and Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi’s office to locate a family that had over $50,000 in unclaimed funds being held by the state of Illinois.

“This is truly a great story about what can be accomplished when local and federal offices work together to help residents,” Crespo said. “The Treasurer’s Office contacted us about a resident that had passed and whose family was unaware of the unclaimed property being held by the state. So we teamed up with Congressman Krishnamoorthi’s office to get in touch with the family and helped them claim their estate.”

The State Treasurer is currently holding 2.5 billion dollars in unclaimed funds for Illinoisans.
Common types of unclaimed property include, but are not limited to, checking and savings accounts, uncashed wage and payroll checks, life insurance proceeds, utility deposits, etc. Unclaimed property, however, does not include real estate or vehicles. With valid identification, the funds can be returned to their respective owner or their beneficiaries at no charge.

“We always suggest that residents should check the Treasurer’s website and search the database to see if the state is holding any funds that belong to them or their family members,” Crespo said. “The database is easy to navigate and my office and the Treasurer’s office are always happy to help assist local residents with this program.”

For more information or to search the Illinois Treasurer’s Office database of unclaimed funds, please visit their website at www.icash.illinoistreasurer.org or contact state Rep. Crespo’s constituent services office at (630) 372-3340.

Crespo represents the 44th District, which includes all or portions of Bartlett, Elgin, Hanover Park, Hoffman Estates, Schaumburg and Streamwood.
