GLENVIEW, Ill. – Anticipating major changes to health care laws throughout the country, state Rep. Laura Fine, D-Glenview, recently passed legislation to keep health insurance affordable and accessible to millions of Illinoisans.
“After Republicans took complete control in Washington, they made it very clear that they would do everything possible to repeal the Affordable Care Act, even if it meant forcing millions of people across the country out of their insurance plans,” Fine said. “To protect Illinois residents, I introduced and passed out of the House legislation which would allow people with pre-existing conditions to keep their health insurance, and requires the state to review insurance rates set for consumers. Together, these two pieces of legislation will protect Illinois citizens from the irresponsible decisions being made on the federal level.”
Fine sponsored two pieces of the legislation that would help people across the state keep their health insurance and fight sky-rocketing costs. House Bill 2959 prevents insurance companies from denying access to health care coverage to people with pre-existing conditions, and House Bill 2624 creates the Health Insurance Rate Review Board. Insurance companies will have to justify the insurance rates to the review board, which has the ability to approve or disapprove the rates they set. This will protect consumers from excessive rates that will pad the profits of insurance companies.
“I am deeply saddened that the U.S. House of Representatives voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act and take away health insurance coverage of cancer survivors, people with diabetes, high blood pressure, and arthritis, organ transplant recipients, victims of sexual assault and much more,” Fine said. “I believe Illinois can and should lead the way in protecting health care coverage and these pieces of legislation will allow us to do that.”
