“Domestic violence shelters play a critical role in our community,” Sente said. “The fact that many are not receiving critical funds from the state due to the ongoing budget impasse is horrible. I hope this drive will raise awareness for the important work our shelters do, while also providing them critically-needed supplies to help women in need.”
Throughout the month of May, Sente will be collecting donations for the shelter at her full-time constituent office, located at 294 Evergreen Drive in Vernon Hills, open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The shelter is currently asking for new and unused bath towels, paper products, cleaning supplies, full-size toiletries and baby items. A full list of needed items can be found at: www.asafeplaceforhelp.org/content/wish-list.
As a strong voice for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence, Sente has supported legislation to help prevent domestic violence and to support survivors of domestic violence. Most significantly, Sente is sponsoring House Bill 3288, which requires any person or organization that suspects a child may be abused to immediately report it to the authorities. Sente also sponsored House Bill 528, which would create a commission to research and develop a plan to implement a statewide sexual assault evidence kit tracking system to make sure each rape kit’s location and status is known.
Sente will also be sponsoring and running in the “Empower Run” – a 5K run for “A Safe Place” on Saturday, May 6th at 9:00 a.m. at the Independence Grove Forest Preserve in Libertyville. To sign up, go to: asafeplace.dojiggy.com/ng/index.cfm/a924efa/regPages/pages/?p=150016
“Survivors of domestic violence need somewhere they can turn to,” Sente continued. “Too often they may feel that they have no options or hope. Places like ‘A Safe Place’ can make all the difference in a survivor’s life.”
