HARRISBURG, ILL. – Since taking office as Illinois state Treasurer two years ago, Mike Frerichs has connected $220 million worth of property back to its rightful owners through the I-Cash Program. State Rep. Brandon Phelps, D-Harrisburg, will be partnering with Treasurer Frerichs to bring I-Cash to Southern Illinois this month in an effort to return forgotten money or property back to its owners.
“Every year there is an abundance of unclaimed property that goes to the state, and many of it goes unknown to the owners for years,” said Phelps. “Some of this money comes in the form of unclaimed security deposits, paychecks, or Illinois income tax returns. Through the I-Cash program, we are able to connect Illinois residents with their unclaimed property, and return the rightful amount of money to its owners.”
Phelps will be hosting an I-Cash table at Kroger in Harrisburg on April 27, from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. A representative from Treasurer Frerichs’ office will be available to help local residents search to find out they have any unclaimed assets. Local residents are encouraged to stop by to find out if they are owed anything by the state or for help filing a free claim to reclaim property.
“I am excited to have the opportunity to help bring this service to Southern Illinois,” continued Phelps. “I encourage area residents to stop by. You may not even be aware that the state owes you money, but this program aims to help folks get back property that is rightfully theirs.”
