DECATUR, Ill. – Local senior citizens showcased their spelling abilities and celebrated their love of learning at state Rep. Sue Scherer’s, D-Decatur, senior spelling bee at the Decatur Macon County Senior Center on Monday.

“Every year I am thrilled for our seniors to participate in the spelling bee competition, and over the years this event has become popular amongst members of the community,” said Scherer. “The spelling bee is always an enjoyable experience not only for the seniors, but for members of the audience as well.”

Scherer’s local spelling bee was part of the Illinois State Senior Spelling Bee competition, coordinated by the Association of Illinois Senior Centers, the Illinois Department on Aging, and senior organizations throughout Illinois. Local winners have the opportunity to advance to the regional round of competition, and regional winners are eligible to compete in the State Finals at the 2017 Illinois State Fair on August 14.
