CHICAGO, Ill. – In response to the agenda proposed by Governor Rauner in his State of the State address, state Rep. Melissa Conyears-Ervin, D-Chicago, reaffirmed her number one priority is passing a budget that supports working families.
“Our state has gone far too long without a budget, and our working families and neighbors are hurting because of the state’s inaction,” Conyears-Ervin said. “We should improve our business climate, but not at the expense of cutting wages and stripping protections away from our workers.”
Conyears-Ervin is committed to working class families in her district and has already announced support for raising the minimum wage and increasing the Earned Income Tax Credit to allow families to keep more of their earnings. She also supports investment into our education system, so Chicago children have the opportunity to be successful and build the local economy.
“I will continue to work with my colleagues on an economic agenda that creates jobs and improves our business climate without making hard-working middle-class families suffer,” Conyears-Ervin said. “We also must invest in in our children’s education, both K-12 and higher education, so they have opportunities for success in affordable, quality schools.”
“I call on the Governor to refocus his agenda to incorporate protections for middle-class families, instead of using them to fill the gaps for an agenda that helps only large corporations.”
