SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Lisa Hernandez, D-Cicero, issued the following statement after passing legislation that allows schools to open on time and provides critical state programs with needed funding:

“Today, I helped pass legislation that will allow local schools to open on time, college students to receive need-based financial aid and provide essential services for our state’s most vulnerable. Despite this good news, I am outraged that it took this long to provide for our state’s most vulnerable residents.

“For over a year the governor has refused to approve funding for in-home services for home-bound seniors, assistance for children with disabilities and breast and cervical cancer screenings. Many area residents and communities across the state cannot afford these services on their own and rely on the state’s help. We must prioritize the needs of the elderly and less fortunate, not play political games that threaten the essential services they rely on.

“I will continue working to create opportunities for working families. I will do whatever I can to help raise the standard of living in Illinois, and that means passing a balanced budget that supports low-income families and communities and asks the wealthy to pay their fair share.”
